MS and her family celebrated their daughter’s Grade 8 graduation last night. The excited mu wanted to do something different and special for dessert and decided con cupcakes for all.

Her daughter and friends were treated to vanilla cupcakes with various colour frostings each topped with a girly fondant treats including bags, hats and shoes! and of course, a touch of sparkling to make it extra special!IMG_0389IMG_0388IMG_0390IMG_0397IMG_0398

On the families’ tables were lemon-licious cupcakes with marshmallow frosting and carrot cake with honey-cream cheese.

It’s an annual event, brothers who now live around the globe meet and go for dinner to catch up and of course, reminisce. This year only 3 of the 5 were in attendance but dinner was held at a restaurant in their hometown where they were all born and the family history dates back for almost 500 years.

For  dessert was a selection of three cupcakes: first; a lemonlicious cupcake with two tone lemon and vanilla frosting topped with the Epprecht family crest (hand painted with food colouring on fondant shields)

To honour their home town; a triple chocolate delight! Chocolate cupcakes filled with Kahlua-tainted ganache and topped with chocolate frosting as well as the Affoltern am Albis wappen /crest (hand painted with food colouring on fondant shields)

And lastly as a fun treat; vanilla cupcakes with a sticky, runny marshmallow filling and topped with vanilla icing stuffed full of mini marshmallow

clip_image005So I got the crazy idea in my head that making homemade gifts were the way to go this year. I don’t actually recall where the idea came from, but after seeing the first recipe on Martha Stewart, I did some research (visiting my go-to baking site as well) and watched countless videos of demonstrations of how to make it. I pretty much do this with every new recipe or technique I want to try. I decided that Martha’s recipe was simplest and most practical – meaning I didn’t actually need to use a candy thermometer! and I enjoyed her how to video. My first attempt was a total flop, I thought (wrongly) that I could substitute the dry gelatine with the vegetarian alternative, Agar Agar. It couldn’t have been more of a mess! After 2 days it still hadn’t set and even the food colouring didn’t mix in, it just floated on top of the sticky sugary mass.
In the end, it worked out much better with the proper dry gelatine. I could even tell the difference when mixing it and of course, the food colouring took! The hardest part now is finding finding the patience to leave it and let it set – so hard not to stick my fingers in it!

I made little gift bags with a few pieces of each colour and found the cutest, ‘vintage-y’ gift tags.
